Tyre Queries

Where can I find my tyre size?
Don't worry it is easier than you think. On the side of you tyre there are a series of numbers. Eg 225/45R17 94W. There will also be information about your tyre make and pattern. Please jot this down and then use our tyres selector on our home page to select your tyre size.
Our Tyre Advice section has detailed information on how to read your tyre size. If in doubt call our helpline on 0800 652 0761.

What does the speed rating mean?
The speed rating is printed on the side of your tyre. Eg if you can see 225/45R17 94W on your sidewall the speed rating is the 'W'. This indicates the maximum speed your tyre is designed for carrying the load indicated by the load rating (the '94' in the example).

Speed Symbol Max Speed mph Max Speed km/h Speed Symbol Max Speed mph Max Speed km/h
M 81 130 H 130 210
P 93 150 V 150 240
Q 99 160 W 169 270
R 106 170 Y 187 300
S 112 180 ZR 150 240
T 118 190

When should I replace my tyres?
The legal minimum is 1.6mm across the central three quarters of the tread in a continuous band around the tyre. However you should inspect your tyres on a regular basis and replace any that are showing signs of defects such as bald patches and splits. Most tyres now have a tyre wear indicator and when this is level with the tread you have reached the legal minimum.
However please remember your tyres are your contact area between you and the road. Their performance in terms of grip and braking distance deteriorates with reduced tread depth. Research has shown that braking distance is increased by 20% when travelling at 50mph when tread depth is reduced from 3mm to 1.6mm.
